TCU carried the Mountain West banner all the way to the BCS promised land this season. Their powerful defense was supposed to dominate the Boise State offense. Instead, the Broncos, aided by a trick play (which everyone in America was waiting for) edged the Horned Frogs, 17-10.
You know what? I like this turnout a lot better.
A down to the wire finish was probably the best thing that could have happened to either of these teams. A blowout for either side would have meant the loser would have been “exposed” as a BCS pretender.
Had TCU won by 40, we would have been talking about how they only played overrated mid-major teams and were never really tested. Had Boise State won by 40, you’d have heard the same thing. Instead, the game came down to the closing seconds and was an instant classic. A last second interception saved the game for Boise in dramatic fashion.
Closing seconds. Instant classic. Dramatic. These aren’t words you throw around with overrated mid-majors.
Boise will probably end up ranked third when the final polls come out on Friday. TCU probably only falls to sixth or seventh. Most programs would kill to finish ranked that high with only a loss to the no. 3 team in the country.
Obviously, this is a major success for the WAC, but it has to be a step forward for the Mountain West, too. The MWC has fielded a BCS team in three of the last six years. That’s without an automatic berth.
For comparison, that’s more at-large teams in that span than the ACC, Big 12, Big East, and Pac-10 have fielded combined.
And while the BCS busters have largely held their weight (2-1 so far), it’s not as though the rest of the conference hasn’t done their part. MWC teams posted a perfect 4-0 record before the Fiesta Bowl. The opposition has been solid, too; their victims include Fresno State, Oregon State, California, and Houston.
That dominance isn’t just limited to this year, either. Over the last three years, the MWC has posted a 9-4 record in bowl games.
Bowl games provide an excellent chance to measure conferences against each other, since they’re in direct competition, unlike most of the year. The Mountain West’s 4-1 record (.800) is better than the following BCS conferences this year: the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-10, and SEC.
That’s right. All of them.
One can only make so many excuses for keeping the Mountain West out of the BCS before they start to sound old. Last year, the MWC complained loudly that they were being excluded. This year, they’re letting their play speak for itself.
So far, they have four impressive wins and one heartbreaking loss in what will probably be remembered as the best bowl game of the year.
Next year, they’ll probably start again with three teams in the top 25 (TCU, BYU, and Utah). TCU can probably expect to be a top-10 team. Though they’re on the outside for now, the Mountain West is knocking at the door of the BCS.
Only time will tell it’s opened to them.

I would personally like to kick the butt of the TCU offensive coordinator. His play calling stunk. One series: 1st down: QB run. 2nd down: QB run. 3rd down 2 yard pass. All throughout the game TCU tried the flat passes. Everyone could see they were not working but yet no change. The QB was capable to throwing down field why not give it a few more shots. In TCU’s case passing would have opened the run. Great game Boise State!
The kids from TCU have nothing to be sad or ashamed of. They are one hell of a ball club! They did their conference proud.I’m glad they played Boise instead of someone else.Patterson is a class coach… I hope he and coach Pete have a few beers over this one. It was very entertaining to watch

Overall excellent game by two great teams that should have been in two separate BCS bowl games. The BCS was fearful of doing that because had they done so, both TCU and BSU would both be undefeated at the end of the bowl season and the BCS didn’t want the embarressment.
You are so right. The BCS didn’t want two Utah’s on their hands this season. That butt kicking Utah gave ‘Bama last year was awesome and two of those from BCS Busters this season would have been humiliating.
Your comparison of at large bids makes no sense. I think you might need to do a little research on how the BCS system works. Saying the MWC has more at large bids in the last six years then the ACC, Big East, Pac 10 and Big 12 combined is like comparing apples to oranges the way the system works. The MWC is average at best, look at their attendance numbers and recruiting compared to any BCS conference, it’s like night and day. Three above average teams beating up on pratically FCS teams doesn’t make a conference. I’ll be happy once the Pac-10 takes BYU and Utah so all this whining about why the MWC doesn’t have a BCS bid can be put to rest.
Matt:
1.) Attendance numbers? Last I checked the 11 players on the field were not counted in the attendance so how does this affect performance on the field?
2.) Clowning the MWC recruiting does ot make other conferences with higher rated recruits look better because in many cases MWC is outplaying them with ‘lesser’ talent.
3.) Funny you should mention 3 above average teams. What do you get in the Pac-10 minus USC? A couple good seasons by Oregon? LMAO
Obviously this person has an agenda. Many of his stats are misleading at best. TCU and Boise State are lucky they played each other and got 1 win out of it. When they start consistently beating the big schools, then you’ll have something to write about.
Brandon/Clown:
Check TCU’s record vs ‘Big schools’ the past five years before revealing your ignorance.
Give me a break about “consistently” beating the “big schools”. How many freaking non-conf. games can you schedule a year? We beat oregon last year, oh it was the beginning of the season, they got better. We have vt and o. state this year, what are the excuses going to be then???? Oh, and by the way, NOT the first time we have beat oregon! Let us into a bigger conf. and then talk. Until then, keep it to yourself!
LOL… what a joke of an article. MWC better than the other conferences. Keep dreaming… Yes, you are possibly better than the Big East or something. Just thank the lord you didn’t play Florida or anyone like that in the Sugar Bowl. Yikes!
Derek:
Very true, they were lucky they didn’t play Florida or else they would have gotten thumped like Utah did last season vs Alabama…oh wait.
I’m not saying the MWC is superior to SEC (obviously), but the Big East/ACC, can easily make this argument. Even the Pac-10 the past two seasons.
